Plenty of people swear by home remedies for acne—but do any of them actually work?
Toothpaste has been rumored to be a home remedy for acne for years. The ingredients in toothpaste actually have some strength to reduce acne, but it may not be a cure all.
Toothpaste is by no means the best treatment for acne, but it can be effective for some people. For those suffering from moderate to severe acne, toothpaste will be ineffective. Acne treatments or a dermatologist are the recommended course of action for severe acne.
Mild to moderate acne can be treated with toothpaste. Depending on the toothpaste, results may differ. Some ingredients in toothpaste may even irritate the skin.
In the event you would like to attempt to use toothpaste to erase acne, there are some suggestions for optimal results. White toothpaste typically works better, colored toothpastes typically have ingredients that are bothersome to the skin. Gels tend to be an ineffective toothpaste remedy on any acne.

Toothpaste can be considered an effective remedy for two potential reasons. First, toothpaste can be a “home-made” mask. A toothpaste mask can draw out impurities from the skin. It can also dry out the skin to reduce inflammations and acne swelling.
Toothpaste also contains menthol. This alcohol has the capability to dry out the pimple, which essentially begins to remove the pimple.
Using toothpaste as an acne remedy is actually a simple process. After thoroughly washing your hands, and the infected area, dab some toothpaste on the acne. Use a generous amount of toothpaste for maximum benefits. Allow the toothpaste to dry and absorb into the skin. Some people wash off the toothpaste after it dries, while others prefer to leave the toothpaste on overnight.
If the acne looks worse, or has spread, toothpaste may not be an effective acne remedy for you, and you should discontinue use.
